Matanuska Glacier Adventure! (for high school students)

Event Description

Ice Climbing Adventure for High Schoolers:
Designed for the truly adventurous, students will enjoy a full day of ice climbing on the Matanuska Glacier.

Dorothy Adler, founder of North America Outdoor Institute and Wilderness Emergency Medical Education, and her team will teach you the basic skills needed to climb on moderate ice slopes, and then help you refine your climbing techniques to move towards more challenging and spectacular terrain throughout the day. No previous climbing experience is necessary, although a strong level of physical fitness is required. This trip is best suited for people looking for a challenging and technical glacial experience.

Students need to be able to carry a backpack with lunch, snacks, water bottle, weather appropriate layers for being on the glacier. Students need to be able to hike roughly 3.5 miles roundtrip over uneven terrain. Students must have good sturdy hiking boots.
Harnesses, helmets, climbing gear, crampons will all be supplied.

7:20 AM: Check in at MSC
7:30 AM: Depart MSC on AK Premier Tour Bus...that's right! We're riding in style!
9:00 AM: Check in at Mat Glacier- begin hiking and climbing adventure
12:00 - 12:30 PM: Sack lunch (students bring their own lunch)
6:00 PM: Board the tour bus and return to MSC
7:30 PM: Estimated arrival back at MSC

We only have 14 spots available in this excursion. Parents are welcome to sign-up and climb with their student; however, if this proves to be a popular activity, we will adjust sign-up preference to students.
