Peterson Bay Coastal Ecology Adventure

Grades 4–6 | August 12–14, 2025 | $550 - Can use allotment 

Get ready for an unforgettable 3-day, 2-night adventure at the Peterson Bay Field Station, located across the water from Homer, Alaska. This immersive science trip is packed with hands-on exploration, discovery, and outdoor fun.

What’s Included

Your $550 fee covers:

  • Round-trip transportation from Palmer to Peterson Bay
  • All meals during the trip
  • Lodging in cozy, heated yurts
  • All educational materials and activity supplies
  • Three 90-minute pre-trip classes to prepare students for the experience

These pre-trip classes are essential—they lay the foundation for deeper understanding and engagement during the field experience.

Trip Highlights

  • Tidepool Exploration: Discover the incredible adaptations of marine life that survive in one of the toughest environments on Earth.
  • Microscope Lab & Plankton Tow: Collect samples and examine the unseen world of plankton that drives ocean ecosystems.
  • Forest Hike & Ethnobotany: Explore Alaska’s unique coastal rainforest while learning about traditional plant uses, ecology, and forest health.
  • Interactive STEM & Art Activities: Engage in creative science-based challenges like “Invent-an-Invert,” plankton races, algae art, and more.
  • Cultural History: Learn about Native Alaskan life through visits to a Dena’ina winter home footprint and an Alutiiq midden site.
  • Evening Fun: Campfires, silly skits, games, and s’mores under the stars!
