Class Description
Avalanche Safety is a three (3) part CTE course designed for new backcountry users. Students learn how to travel, recognize avalanche terrain, and complete rescues with designated avalanche gear. Two (2) days of this course are in field classrooms in a backcountry setting.
This course is an amazing introduction to avalanche safety and education.
The parts of the course are:
● Six (6) hours - Allen & Mike’s Avalanche Book: A Guide to Staying Safe in Avalanche (purchase here)
Terrain by Allen O’Bannon and Mike Clelland, 2012
● Eight (8) hours - Avalanche Awareness
● Eight (8) hours - Avalanche Rescue
● Eight (8) hours - Cold weather first aid and CPR
Students will be able to recognize avalanche terrain, perform safe travel techniques, and complete rescue scenarios designed to prepare them for future backcountry traveling. Upon completion of the program, students receive two (2) certifications from A3, essential cold-weather first aid training, and CPR certification. Rental gear is available for those who need it.
Students are eligible to receive .5 science elective credit for completion of this course.

The age requirement for this course is 14+.
Prior ski/snowboard experience is not required!
Dates: **Must attend all three dates of a block for credit**
All required reading must be completed prior to the first course of each Block. Courses run from 8:00am-4:00pm each date.
