Class Description

This is a unique one-of-a-kind class that will allow students to earn 2 full high school credits and meet several graduation requirements. By taking this class, students will have the opportunity to earn credits for Alaska History, Alaska Wildlife, Alaska Documentary (Short Story), and Alaska Literatures. They will get the full Alaska Experience!

In this class, there will be an emphasis on experiential place-based learning, which will occur throughout the semester by hearing from guest speakers as well as going on several field trips. We will learn about the history of Alaska in class, and then we will go see it and experience it in person! Some of these field trips will include the Alaska Native Heritage Center, the Alaska Aviation Museum, Independence Mine State Park, and a culminating trip to Juneau in the spring to visit the state capital!

Alaska History

In the fall semester, students will meet for class on Tuesdays from 12:00-1:30, and then we will go out to connect what we’ve learned to our own community on most Thursdays (there may be some exceptions depending on availability of field trip sites).

Alaska Wildlife

After the completion of the first-semester class in November, there will be a week-long intensive Alaska Wildlife class led by Mr. Joe Gelatt in December (dates TBD). During this week, students will go on various excursions and engage in hands-on activities related to the wilderness and wildlife of Alaska.

Alaska Documentary

During the second semester, students will choose a topic of interest that they have learned about in the Alaska History and/or Alaska Wildlife class, and they will make a documentary video about their topic. Students will meet for class on Tuesdays and Thursdays (12:00-1:30), with the culminating Juneau trip taking place after spring break.

Alaska Literature

Students will complete their Alaska Literature class concurrently with what they learn in Alaska Documentary during the second semester.
