Class Description
Kindergarten Reading and Math Foundational Skills
Children will benefit from a variety of teaching strategies covering important academic skills.
For reading, we will work on phonemic awareness, letter names, letter sounds, segmenting and blending words, identifying beginning, middle and ending sounds in words, rhyming, syllables, digraphs, consonant blends, punctuation, high frequency words, comprehension, vocabulary, and so much more. This will also include the brief but very useful Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Program routines which cover many of the above academic concepts in a fun, kinesthetic approach where children learn and practice reading foundational skills.
For math, we will work on number sense, counting, identifying numbers out of sequence, patterns, shapes, comparing numbers, sorting objects into given categories, addition, subtraction (0 to 20), base ten numbers, teen numbers and much more.
We will use music and movement for brain breaks, listen to stories, and occasionally work on a project. Children will have fun socializing and learning important school routines.
This class combines direct instruction as well as hands-on workshop activities.
This class is a great addition to the homeschool and hybrid MCS format. It doesn’t replace the homeschool teaching but is a beneficial extension, further helping children learn.
Attendance is important as we build up on the previously taught and learned skills.
